Distracted Driving Awareness Month
April Is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Engaging in activities such as texting, using social media, adjusting the GPS or radio and consuming food while driving can reduce a driver’s reaction time, leading to accidents.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving killed 3,522 people in 2021— nearly 10% of all U.S. traffic fatalities.
During Distracted Driving Awareness month, you may notice increased law enforcement on roadways as part of the nationwide campaign.
This is a great time to try phone-free driving if you struggle to keep your eyes on the road. Try putting your phone in silent mode and storing it in the glove box while you drive. Plus, phone use while driving is banned in most states.
Do your part to create safer roadways for everyone and commit to distraction-free driving by following tips to decrease driving distractions:
- Make any necessary adjustments before you start driving.
- Minimize potential navigation distractions by planning your route.
- Eliminate the urge to use your phone or other devices by putting them out of sight in a safe compartment.
- Pull over to a safe location to make phone calls or send text messages.
- Avoid eating while driving. Secure children and pets before hitting the road.
- Resist the urge to reach for items while driving.
