jdowdinsHow to Keep Your Family Safe in the Summer Heat
Summer can be a beautiful and enjoyable time, offering longer days and a brighter world in which to enjoy various activities and create memories. However, as you and your loved ones head out into the warm weather and sunny conditions, you must be aware of the potential dangers that summer can pose to your health and know how to protect yourselves.
Consider the following precautions related to summer heat:
- Check the forecast. One of the first things you should do before heading into the great outdoors is to know what conditions await you. If heat advisories or excessive heat warnings are in effect, it may be best to reschedule activities or adjust them to limit your exposure to such conditions.
- Dress appropriately. If you plan to spend extended time outdoors, ensure you and your family are prepared to handle the elements. Choose lightweight clothing in light colors made from breathable materials. Be mindful of the strong sunlight of summer as well and bring hats and sunglasses.
- Pack supplies. Even if you are not planning to be outdoors for long, dehydration, sunburn and heat illnesses can set in quickly. Be sure to pack sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every two hours or when needed, such as after swimming. Additionally, have drinking water on hand.
